The Wedding Cake

The first wedding cakes were much more like bread than the sweet cakes that we serve at weddings today. This bread-like creation was broken over the head of the bride as a blessing and a wish for long life and many years of happiness. Today's cakes are grand and serve as the centerpiece of the reception. They are, however, still symbolic of the commitment of the bride and the groom to sharing a life together.

Your choice in wedding cake design makes a statement about your personality and your sense of style. Wedding cakes can be made in many shapes, styles and colors. When considering your choices for a wedding cake, factor in how large an area you will have to display your cake. You will want your cake to fit in with the location, your decorating scheme and the over-all mood you have created for your reception.

Of course, your biggest concern should be the taste. Your cake needs to taste as good as it looks. You have many different options for the flavor of your cake. White cream cheese, raspberry swirl, chocolate fudge, lemon, almond, apple spice, and orange blossom are just a few of the flavors offered for wedding cakes.

You also have many choices for the icing. Butter cream is the most popular as it is a soft, smooth and creamy icing that can be easily shaped and tinted. For a totally different look, consider a rolled fondant. It has a smooth porcelain-like finish which serves as a blank canvass for a multitude of decorating choices. There is also a bittersweet chocolate ganache for the chocolate lovers.

In addition to all of the flavors for the cake and the icing, you can also add a filling. Vanilla butter cream, chocolate butter cream, cream cheese, bavarian cream, raspberry, strawberry, and the list goes on and on. Before actually ordering your wedding cake you should make certain that you get a sample of the flavor of cake, icing and filling to make certain that it passes the taste test.

When considering how you want your cake decorated, look to the motif of the bridal gown or the wedding invitations or programs. Incorporate your wedding theme, colors from your bridesmaids dresses, or look to your bridal bouquet for inspiration. You can go with a very elegant look or you can go with something very whimsical and nontraditional or something in-between. Use fresh fruit or fresh cut flowers to decorate your cake, or use edible pearl clusters or fall leaves, dogwood blossoms or flowers made from gum paste. The options are limitless.

Remember, when you and your spouse feed each other a piece of wedding cake at the reception, the act represents the love, honor and respect you have for each other. So, in addition to the beauty of the cake itself, you can appreciate what it stands for.
