Large roles in 19th and 20th century America's development were played by coal, steel, and railroads. In 1842, William Henry, along with his son-in-law Seldon Scranton, and Seldon's brother George, arrived in Pennsylvania. The men purchased land and secured funding for the construction of the Lackawanna Furnace. The Scrantons were producing rails for market by 1846. The Scranton brothers had a cousin by the name of Joseph Scranton who was a successful Georgia merchant, and in 1847 they invited him to invest in their growing industry. George had secured the contract for producing "T" rails from the Eerie Railroad. Soon, Scranton became a major producer of the "T" rails.

The Borough of Scranton, named after its founders, was officially incorporated in 1856. In 1863, the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company built a steam railroad that entered Scranton. Then in 1866, the boroughs of Providence and Hyde Park were merged with Scranton incorporating Scranton as a city.
