A friend of mine has been working at his office for the last 2 years. It's a very good job with real potential. He's a single guy and ready to settle down, so he's making an effort to look for the right kind of person. Since he listens to Dr. Laura all the time, his standards are high. There's no time to waste on anything less! But what does this story have to do with an air purifier?

To make a long story short he began to realize that one of his co-workers is rather pretty - not only that, but she's also a hard worker, sweet and, more importantly, she isn't a gossip.

So anyhow, when she brought a small, portable air purifier to the office and my friend was curious. You know the kind of item I mean - it is one of those electrical air purifiers with a motor that turns a little blade within it. You pour the perfume into a bowl with water, set the cap topped with the pump and it's ready to go. It goes buzzing away, quietly purifying the air in the whole place.

Now, during his lunch break, this guy managed to get up the courage to go to his colleague's cubicle to ask her where she picked up her clever air purifier. As he was walking towards her, she turned, took one look at him, and instantly turned to the air purifier to increase the concentration of the lavender essence in it. My friend rather amused. He had been thinking that she wanted to make her cubicle more appealing, which is why she got the air purifier, while all the time, she was hoping to reduce a bad smell.

Not that this guy was a stinky person by any standards! Of course when it's hot, he sweats as much as anyone else. But that was no rationale for being so high-handed about it. Well, to continue the saga, he went on as though as he hadn't noticed her air purifier at all and instantly resolved to buy himself some good smelling deodorant. And maybe some breath mints would be a good idea too.

Despite his revulsion towards the air purifier from then on, he did begin to notice a lot more about that particular colleague. For one thing, the scent of the air purifier was a telling reflection of her moods. If ever she was happy and the whole world seemed joyous, she would make use of a heady citric scent. If she was broody and wanted to crawl under a rock, it would be lavender. And if she was in one of those strange vague moods, the scent, too, would be vague. My friend said he later discovered that it was some sort of oriental invention that included ginseng and a whole lot of other stuff.

Anyways, to keep on with the story, this air purifier colleague started noticing that there was a pleasing scent about my friend. And instead of a scared and horrified look, she started giving him a weak smile - occasionally. She eventually came to believe that he's a good guy and she risked going out with him. Not a lot at the beginning, but more frequently later. They're still going strong. All thanks to one lone air purifier.
