Soldiers traditionally create extremely close friendships. These can last for a lifetime if allowed. However, it isn't unusual to lose contact when one or the other finally leaves the service. Social networking sites can help prevent that.

With social networking sites it is possible to not only keep in touch, but also to efficiently let everyone on your contact lists get bulletins as events occur in your life. It is possible to keep current pictures posted on your profile to show yourself, family, home, pets or whatever else is of concern.

Some sites allow other files to be uploaded, which could allow audio files or even multimedia. Film of a child's first step, audio of a daughter's singing or anything else. This can even be used to send holiday greetings, with pictures, audio and possibly video which can easily and efficiently reach your list of contacts and friends, and allow them to access at their convenience instead of when the postal service cooperates.

Blogging allows your readers to see what concerns you face, hear your plans and know how things are going for you. Some will even find that writing ones thoughts allows one to structure thoughts more efficiently and logically, or to put emotional events into more context. Writing can grow to be a habit, leading to increased skill and facility and possible to other opportunities.

With two way traffic, this can allow not only direct conversations between a pair of friends, but group discussions where several people read a message and respond with their own thoughts, which can spawn still more responses. Group dynamics can allow a much more complete understanding of the original topic than a single person can expect. Topics can be brought up that you'd never have considered, teaching you about new things and providing thoughts and experiences you'd otherwise never have.

When the time comes for vacations, you might be able to arrange a mutual trip with old friends. Possibly even take a vacation to their part of the world, letting your families meet some of the people who populate your old stories.

This network of friends, family and acquaintances can also let you know when they find something you'll want to know about. This can be a new movie, product or event, and having a network scattered over the world allows you access to far more markets than you could easily manage by yourself.

Moreover, this doesn't have to be restricted to the servicemembers only. Spouses and children will also have friends they desire to keep after a move or even leaving the service. They can keep up with stories of mutual friends, discuss current events, both public and private, and even hopes and desires for the future.
