I have spent the last several years as a business consultant, specializing in helping entrepreneurs identify and then start their new businesses. It was not uncommon for these business newcomers to invest thousands. Often the investment totals hundreds of thousands of dollars. All this to get their business up and ready to open. This huge investment is always made before the business is even open!

While I believe that it is foolish to ever start a business without adequate financing, eBay can provide a unique opportunity. New eBay businesses can provide entrepreneurs with the opportunity to start a new business with a small investment of both time and money. Yet the potential is there to make money on ebay even with a small startup investment.

One way to do this is to start part-time using dropshippers. Many newcomers start their eBay business on a part-time basis. They then nurture the business into a successful full-time enterprise. This allows them to keep their current job and the income that goes with that job during the start-up phase. Thus their bills can be paid as the business is started and operations begin. Having an inflow of cash from a job removes a great deal of the money pressures, and the need to make huge profits immediately from a new business. These part-timers can then make money on ebay that is reinvested to grow their new business.

Dropshipping companies provide product that is not paid for until after it is sold on eBay. Most even provide access to pictures and descriptions for you to use in the auction listing. You can therefore make money on ebay with no investment in inventory. Even more savings occur when the dropshipping company pulls, packages and ships the sold items directly to the customers for you.

It is important to learn everything you can BEFORE you start your eBay business efforts. Know the products and/or services that you will be dealing with. Know the details of online marketing for your specific business. It is also very important that you know the laws Federal, State and local rules and guidelines associated with running a part-time business from your home. Know the eBay rules and guidelines that you must operate within as well. Learn those laws, rules and guidelines, and always adhere to them. Remember; even home-based business need to adhere to laws and rules. In fact, there are some cases where you may not even be able to operate a business from your home. Check before you start! That helps to maximize the potential to make money on ebay.

The bottom line: Nothing is free. However, an eBay business does provide the opportunity to start with little or no investment of time or money. It is possible to start part-time and with little upfront cash. You can make money on ebay with a small investment. Time, patience and smart business decisions are all you need.
