When Friday finally rolls around, our first instinct is to indulge - after all it's the start of the weekend! It's our chance to sleep in, sit in front of the TV, surf the net, talk on the phone and gorge ourselves. Well, that seems like the ideal world, but what if you are trying to maintain a healthy weight? Even if you work out and eat sensible meals during the week doesn't give you just cause to let everything go by the wayside. You are essentially erasing all your hard work and consistency when you deviate for the weekend.

A recent study revealed that most adults take in an extra 222 calories over the weekend which equates to 15% of the number of calories the average women needs each day. It is human nature to want to reward one's self after hard work and food happens to be the most popular prize. Instead of loading up your grocery cart in the snack isle, treat yourself to a small portion of your dessert of choice outside of your home. Better yet, find healthier ways to honor yourself by getting a massage or taking a class. It's the perfect time to sign up for those tap dancing lessons your parents never gave up when you were a child.

The truth is that when we drink and dine with friends, we end up consuming a lot more than if we were breaking bread by our lonesome. Also, keep in mind a pre dinner cocktail lowers our judgment ability to turn down those fried appetizers at dinner. Instead, ask friends or family to do other activities that don't involve calorie intake like going to a museum or a festival. Also, opt for ordering a glass of red wine with dinner or treat yourself to a light beer during the week so you aren't craving it so much by Friday evening.

It's Ok to enjoy some downtime in front of the TV, but try to limit it to 2 hours and watch your eating habits. If you are running errands during the day and know you'll be out for a long time, throw an apple or a protein bar in your purse to avoid that tempting food court at the mall. The most important thing to remember is to allow yourself downtime during the week so you don't feel like running wild during the coveted weekend.
