If you are in good health but want to do something about a protruding abdomen or loose, flabby skin due to weight loss, you may want to consider having a procedure called abdominoplasty. The common name for this is a tummy tuck. Men and women alike have this procedure done to minimize a protruding abdomen caused by fat. This procedure also tightens the vertical muscles of the abdomen. If you are considering a tummy tuck, you should know that there is a possibility of scarring because this is surgery, after all.

The people who tend to have the abdominoplasty surgery are women who are not going to have any more children, men and women who have lost a lot of weight and have loose, flabby skin hanging off their abdomen and anyone who has a protruding abdomen.

The abdominoplasty procedure starts with you getting a local or a general anesthesia. The type of anesthesia will depend on what your surgeon decides to do. You should know after your first meeting with your surgeon, what type of anesthesia they will use. In the surgery an incision is made between the hipbones and around the naval. Skin is separated from the abdominal wall and lifted over the vertical abdominal muscles then the muscles are sewn together to tighten them. The skin is then stretched down and flattened and any remaining skin over the incision is cut away with the skin flap sewn into its new place.

Your surgeon will give you a list of things you should and should not do after your surgery. This list will probably include, but is not limited to wearing supportive garments, removal of sutures and exercises that will tone the muscles. You are also encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to keep to a diet that will not put weight back. All these steps are important to make the most of the procedure and to make it last.
