Aquarium Care Options

If you have an aquarium that you have invested thousands of dollars into and you want to go on vacation, the first question that comes to mind is aquarium care. What do you do to ensure that your aquarium will stay healthy while you are away? Well, there are a few options that you have.

You can see if there is a service in your area that will come by and feed and care for your fish while you are gone. Another option is to check the fish stores and see if they offer some kind of fishsitting service. Although both of these methods may be costly, it is better to have someone there if something should go wrong while you're away.

Another option is to set up an automated system such as automatic dosing pumps, float switches, or systems that have PH flow rates, lighting, heating and other automatic controls. You still need someone to pop in daily to check and see that everything is as it should be.

You're probably thinking a friend would be best to check and feed your fish, but if you have an expensive reef aquarium then it is best that they start coming in a week before you leave. This will help them get used to your fishes' habits and comfortable with the mechanics of the tank. There are also feeding blocks on the market that you can put in your tank and your fish can feed of them at their leisure. These blocks dissolve slowly over a period of time and won't pollute the tank.

There are also automatic feeders on the market, which are extremely efficient. Check with your local fish store for what kinds of food you can place in this automatic feeder, keeping in mind that you have top tank fish, middle fish and the bottom fish. You want all of them to get their fair share of food. There are foods that won't clog your equipment, but even with this method you still need someone to drop by on a daily basis.

So you can go on that vacation you've been looking forward to with a little less worry than you would have had otherwise. If you plan properly, you will return to the same healthy aquarium that you left.
