Summer has come and gone and now the party season is heading our way. The road to Christmas is a long one but it is liberally paved with balls and bashes that require spectacular dresses to be worn complete with bling and other marvellous accessories, not to mention killer heels.

Shoulders pads are back with gusto and with that look on top goes thigh length dresses and skirts below the waist. Although that may be the latest trend party dresses can still be as varied as you want. So, if you are feeling flush stock up on two or three totally different styles.

Heading for an event where anything goes then you'll find the perfect choice on the high street where everything is offered. Strapless, sleeveless, or fitted with full length sleeves the choice of dresses is overwhelming. Not only are different styles in abundance, but available in a large selection of colours and lengths.

For the formal occasion long and mid-length evening dresses are available in eternally popular black. For the more daring a multi-coloured, maxi-length dress that harks back to the summer we never had, or a red ruffle long evening dress will definitely set you apart from the crowd.

Although short dresses and skirts may be on-trend for everyday wear for those seeking something more traditional full-length, one-shoulder evening dresses in classical black or a stylish off-the-shoulder purple satin lace ball gown would still be suitably elegant.

Now that summer is over, it's time to ditch the bare leg look and return to wearing tights or leggings. This autumn the 80s effect is also making its impact in hosiery so black dotted tights and elaborate lace affairs will be fashionable and widely available. But, as always, black opaques will go with just about any outfit, including short party dresses.

When it comes to shoes, the classical strappy sandal look is eternal, but this year shoe boots are threatening to push those traditional heels to one side. Gladiator style open-toed shoes with killer heels in metallic colours are bound to prove popular this party season, and will certainly not look out of place with many favourite black little numbers, especially maxi length.

Alternatively, party goers will be pulling on heeled animal footwear, such as zebra platform sandals or leopard court shoes. Of course, stilettos are timeless and available in anything from traditional black to retro-white, but if you intend dancing you might want to opt for something not quite so high!
