Weblogs, or simply blogs, are as various as grains of sand, numbering more than 100 million and growing daily. The only true constant is that they contain chronological entries, usually on one (often broad) topic. Given that, the parts of a blog can be hard to pin down. But let us take a brief look at some of the more common parts. Since all blogs have entries, we can identify seven common components to them: 1. Title - All entries will have a title. This is typically no more than ten words or so which describe the essence of the entry's information, comment, or question. 2. Date: This is the date the entry is made or authored. 3. Author: This is an auspicious sounding term which simply identifies the person who made the entry. 4. Entry: The entry itself is usually text, a new idea, a response to an old idea, feedback on something, but could in some cases include art or other media. This can also be called a "post" as the entry is being posted to the blog. 5. Comments: A comment is more informal than an entry and is typically used for feedback on a specific thought or creative work. 6. Link/permalink: A link of some sort will be listed here. If it is a permalink (often indicated with a "#"sign), then you can be sure that it may be used for this entry regardless of whether the entry is eventually archived or moved somewhere. 7. Category: Unless they are a single, diary-type blog, most blogs have categories or topics by which they are organized. Another primary feature of any blog is its home page. This is the first page you see when you enter the blog, and therefore functions much like a store window. Commonly found components of a blog home page include: A. Title: This is the title of the blog itself, much like the name of a store. B. Latest entry: Usually the latest blog entry will be carried here since it is presumably one of the main reasons to come to this blog. Often but not always the preceding entries, chronologically, are attached below this one. C. Other links: One or more side bar areas (usually vertical in the right and/or left margin) often contain other links to archived entries, related information sites, etc. D. Search function: More sophisticated blogs will include a search function which, as you would expect, allows you to search the blog for specific text combinations. E. Theme: Often colors, font type, pictures and words are combined to give the reader a flavor of what they can expect in the blog content e.g. formal research, informal comments, funny, opinionated, etc. F. Other: Other items frequently found on the main blog page include some information about the blog owner; perhaps some rules about what can or cannot be posted to the blog, and a way to contact the blog owner directly. If advertisers are involved, their sponsorship will likely be noted here too. In conclusion, this not an exhaustive list of all the parts of the Blog but on every blog you will find some parts on this list. Did you find this article useful?
