Mobile music company Omnifone has announced their new MusicStation service has launched as of 12 June. They now have a good head start on Apple whose iPhone launches on 29 June in the United States.

MusicStation offers a low-cost, flat-rate music downloading service that can be accessed on most handsets in Europe and Asia. MusicStation users in the UK can download all the music they want for £1.99 per week. A premium membership costs an extra £1 per week and premium users will be able to send the music files to a PC as well as onto their phones or wireless handsets.

"The launch of MusicStation heralds the next generation mobile music experience for the hundreds of millions of mobile phone subscribers worldwide who want a simple, easy-to-use digital music experience," said Rob Lewis, CEO of Omnifone. "MusicStation will give users of any music-capable handset the ability to legally access, download and enjoy an unlimited amount of music, from a global music catalogue supported by the music industry, all for a small weekly fee, wherever they are."

It wasn't so long ago that any service offering unlimited music downloads must have been an outfit of pirates. How things have changed. Now there are a number of legitimate music listening and downloading services, including Yahoo Music Now, Rhapsody, and now this new service from MusicStation.

With backing from the handset manufacturers Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and Samsung, and international licensing arrangements with Universal Music Group, SONY BMG Music Entertainment, EMI Music and Warner Music International, MusicStation is certain to be making international headlines for some time to come.
