Wherever you hear the word's "social networking site" you will inevitably hear about Facebook. Facebook has been around for quite some time. It and its rival networking site, MySpace, have become the premier way to stay in touch with friends from the past and make new connections. This is not just a website for kids and teenagers though.

It has ensnared many adults into joining as well. If you have never had a Facebook account or are unfamiliar with how it works, this article can help guide you through the history of the website and how you can become a part of one of the largest social networking sites on the planet. Before long you will be an expert designing your own page layouts and making friends across the globe.

How can Facebook help me?

Facebook can help you find friends that you have lost contact with. It can also be used to make new friends. It is an excellent way to share your thoughts, feelings and your opinions on public matters. You may wish to start a blog and begin writing fiction. Maybe you are a poet and you need an audience?

This website can be whatever you want it to be. There are often groups that share their lives and ideologies. You may be surprised at what you can get back from this website. There are endless possibilities. You simply have to get out there and look. Maybe if you are lucky you will even have people find you.

When was Facebook created?

Facebook was created by Mike Zuckerberg back in 2004. He originally designed the website for just students attending Harvard where he was going to school. Later he included other Ivy League schools into his network. From there it was just a matter of time until high school students and people from all over the world could join.

It is hard to imagine that this giant social networking site started off so small. It now boasts over 300 million members. It has even surpassed MySpace as of April 2008.

How is Facebook different from MySpace?

Facebook and MySpace may be social networking sites but they do differ on appearance, ease of use and applications. Most people find MySpace a bit easier to use. There are complete instructions on how to create your profile and in general the categories are much simpler.

Facebook, on the other hand, gives you a list of people from your job, high school or college that are members. This can make it incredibly easy to find people that you know or want to be associated with. Both websites give you the opportunity to write in details about your life. As for which one is easier, it all depends on which website you are most familiar with.

How do I add people to my friend's list?

This depends on if you know the people's email address or name. If you are just looking to add random, interesting people to your friend's list, just send them a message requesting that they add you. It is always nice and considered polite to send a message first.

Many people will turn down an anonymous request. If you know of a specific person you are looking for, simply do a search based on their name. Be warned though! You may come up with pages and pages of people with that exact name.
