International Adoption Should Signal Adopter Take Caution

For those couples striving to become parents yet have endured heart-breaking fertility results and failed domestic adoption attempts, there may yet be another positive alternative. International Adoption is currently on the rise in this country and is giving hope to many couples despairing of ever experiencing the parenthood they so desperately desire.

The term International Adoption is really self-explanatory - which is that parental hopefuls of one country adopt a child who is a citizen of a different country. As with every major life-changing decision, adopting a child can be a rewarding experience as well as an extremely challenging one, and parental hopefuls must invest in extensive research and investigation to avoid being carried away by the emotional aspects of this extremely important decision.

If you are looking into an International Adoption, you must fully realize that it is neither easy nor cheap and caution is required. Most couples agree that it can be quite complicated, tricky and scary, nor is it for everyone. This is especially so when there is a language barrier and when you wake up to the fact that in many areas of the world such as Guatemala, Adoption is regarded as another major industry rather than focusing on the humanitarian aspect of the transaction. Guatemala is one of the top five countries that place children for International Adoption. Last year approximately 3700 children were adopted from Guatemala by couples from the United States.

Unfortunately, Guatemala, located in Central America, is one of the most controversial areas in the world of International Adoption today and couples considering this area must exercise great caution and definitely do their homework for these three main reasons: 1] Guatemala is one of the rare countries that places newborn healthy children directly for the International Adoption; 2] It has the most lenient requirements of countries placing children for International Adoption; and 3}the government of Guatemala does not have a specific procedure for approving International Adoption agencies.

As you can see, Adoption in Guatemala is big business even though we have stated that the interests of the child very rarely (though not always) come first. Even so, you read the figures that 3700 children from Guatemala were adopted by US couples. Our caution is this: when potentially vulnerable prospective adoptive parents enter a climate that is more fuelled by finance and greed then humanitarian concern, you have the potential for major conflict and heart-break.

Now that you have considered all options, sought guidance from your Heavenly Father and have decided that International Adoption is the path to follow (whether from Guatemala or another country), your next step is to consult a reputable adoption agency or professional with experience and expertise in International Adoptions. This step is crucial since this whole procedure is essentially all about Immigration. Therefore meeting all the legal requirements (paperwork) at your local area can make or break all your heartfelt efforts and plans to become loving, adoptive parents.
