Anyone who has been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) will understand how painful a condition it can be. Not only is it painful, it can also be embarrassing for many people in social situations which can also put limits on their lifestyle.

The condition called Irritable Bowel Syndrome is quite a common condition. The actual causes of IBS have not been fully determined. The symptoms of the condition can be different between one person and another. However, there are a number of common symptoms that include a tender and painful stomach, constipation and in some cases diarrhoea. Sufferers can also complain of a full up or bloated feeling in the stomach.

Recent research has highlighted that certain enzymes and live friendly bacteria can assist in relieving the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. One of these friendly bacteria is probiotics which can be found in a variety of natural diary produce such as yoghurts. Studies have shown that these probiotic friendly bacteria are believed to help the body's digestion system by making it more effective at absorbing the nutrients that we need from the food we eat.

There are many different types of probiotics available however, studies have shown that there are two particular probiotics that can help to relieve the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. They are better known as lactobacillus and Bifid bacteria.

If you suffer from IBS consult your doctor first to see if this is recommended. Look for products that have a high percentage of these 2 friendly bacteria strains in them. There are two popular brands that use these two particular strains one is Yakult which is a refreshing drink and another brand is Actimel.

As well as probiotic drinks there are other ways to help relieve the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. For example, make sure you drink plenty of liquids throughout the day especially fresh filtered water as this will help to keep your body hydrated. Drinking liquids helps with lubricating the bowels to improve constipation. If you suffer from regular bouts of diarrhoea it is important to drink water to replace the fluids the body uses to discharge the diarrhoea.

There a number of natural treatments you can use to help relieve the symptoms of IBS. For example, aloe vera juice is believed to have soothing qualities that can help your digestive system to digest the food you eat more effectively. Another way to reduce the symptoms is to stay more relaxed because it has been found that if you are stressed out it tends to worsen the conditions of IBS.
