Caleta de Fuste is a purpose built holiday resort on the east coast of Fuerteventura. Caleta has been expanded in recent years, with the addition of a second 18-hole golf course and a new Sheraton Hotel, although development is strictly controlled. Also known as Costa Caleta, especially among the package holiday companies, this low-key resort mainly attracts families from northern Europe.

Caleta's beach is situated within a large bay lined with several cafes and bars. The pale sand, which has been brought in from elsewhere on the island, slopes gently into the sea making this beach ideal for young children. To the south of the bay are several small lagoons, created when the Sheraton Hotel was built. There are several attractions in Caleta de Fuste that are geared towards children, including a mini-golf course, play area with trampolines, and a mini-train ride.

Caleta's harbour is situated next to the old castle tower, El Castillo, which dates from the 17th century. There are various boat trips available from the harbour, including whale watching and catamaran sailing excursions. The resort also offers a range of waterspouts, in particular windsurfing and scuba diving. Lessons are usually available for novices. Caleta also boasts two 18-hole golf courses. The first of these opened in 2002 and hosted the Spanish Open just two years later.

To the north of the resort is the coastal path that leads to Nuevo Horizonte. This pleasant walkway alongside the rocks attracts Ground Squirrels, known locally as chipmunks. These creatures are tame enough to be fed by hand. Nuevo Horizonte boasts a number of good restaurants and bars.

Caleta de Fuste is not known for its nightlife, although there are several music bars that stay open late. One of the most popular is Piero's in the Castillo Centro, which offers karaoke and live entertainment shows. Caleta has a variety of restaurants of different nationalities, including Spanish, Italian, Indian, Chinese and Greek. One of the best places in the resort for a memorable meal out is the fish restaurant, Frasquita, which overlooks the beach. Also highly recommended is the restaurant within the 5-star Hotel Elba Palace, situated near the golf complex.

The Atlantico Centre, on the southern outskirts of Caleta, is the resort's main shopping complex. Along with a large supermarket, the centre has a cinema, amusement arcade, bowling alley, designer shops, bars and restaurants. All this is set within attractive gardens alongside a lake. Close to the Atlantico Centre are several fast food outlets including Burger King and McDonalds. Every Saturday morning the island market visits the resort. Here you will find clothes, ceramics, lace, embroidery and ethnic African goods.

Caleta de Fuste is flat, so it's quite easy to get around. Bicycle hire is readily available. The resort is situated just 4 miles (7km) from Fuerteventura Airport. Taxis between Caleta and the airport cost around 15 euros. There is a regular bus service from the resort to the capital, Puerto del Rosario, and other destinations on the island.
