Exercise-How To Fit It In And Enjoy It

Many people think of exercise as a necessary evil. I've never understood why someone wouldn't include some sort of movement into their daily existence. This being said, I will admit that while I am absolutely not a gym rat, but exercise has always played a big part of who I am today.

Actually this article started out at the suggestion of a colleague/friend. We had been e-mailing each other about an article I was submitting to her website, when I mentioned I had to leave for the "gyn" and then off to my day job. She thought I meant the "gym". (I had mentioned my love of power-walking in other correspondences) She wrote back groaning to me that she should be going as well, but didn't have the energy to get there. When I explained my actual destination she laughed and mentioned that I should really write an article/column on my need to stay fit.

Staying fit is not only a personal choice for me-it's a way of life. From the time I was seven I had some kind of physical activity. My first venture was in the world of dance. Having been diagnosed with scoliosis, the orthopedics suggested ballet to help strengthen my back muscles. The classes not only helped my body, but my self-esteem as well. I wound staying "in class" basically until I was 31! I even minored in musical theater during my university years. Before I left completely, I also went through several years where I added weight sessions and stationary bike classes (before they were popular I might add!).

Due to family obligations, budget and yes, even health issues (somehow, rheumatoid arthritis arrived at my doorstep) I had to give up paying for classes and gym memberships. However, that in no way meant I had to give up exercise! I formed my own 20 minute strengthening program. I combined movements from dance class and physical therapy sessions which worked all parts of my body. But that wasn't all. I replaced my love of leotards and tights and traded them in for walking shoes and some cute sweats and hit the streets first with a German Shepard mix with big brown eyes, then a Golden Retriever/Labrador mix with the same big pleading orbs. When weather doesn't permit, I have a treadmill right next to this computer.

We have all heard about the importance of cardio exercises. The heart association, WEBMD, the American Cancer Society and the Arthritis Foundation all promote not only strengthening sessions, but the importance of raising one's heart rate for at least 30 minutes most days of the week. In my family, both parents have heart conditions as well as diabetes. My mother and sister both have high blood pressure. While I haven't personally gone onto the American Psychiatric Association website, I'm sure they promote the benefits of taking a simple walk as well. The American Medical Association provides the information that even 20 minutes of walking three times a week can lower or eliminate the need for anti-depressants for many who suffer from mild to moderate depression.

I get more than a fit body from my 45 minutes a day. When I put on my I-Pod, grab my pooch and little blue bag and head out the door I claim this as my "me" time. I clear my head, reduce my stress, put myself in a wonderful mood (especially true if I've had a trying day) which rejuvenates my outlook and creativity. I'm a much nicer person to live with for having given myself this time alone with only nature and my furry companion.
