Cho Seung-Hui Tattoo Interpretation - Paradoxical and Prophetic

Sadly Cho never connected to his great Christian heritage in South Korea, where some of the largest and most dynamic churches flourish.

Demonic influences definitely contributed to the making of this mass murderer.

The strange inscription on one of Cho's arms - the words "ISMAIL AX" in red ink reference the Biblical sacrifice of Abraham, in which God commands the patriarch to sacrifice his own son. Abraham begins to comply, but God intervenes at the last moment to save the boy. Another obscure interpretation may be to a passage in the Koran referring to Abraham's destruction of pagan idols. No matter how you look at it, "the devil comes to kill, steal, and destroy" (John 10:10). As Satan filled the heart of Judas who was a murderer from the beginning, Cho equally was misdirected by the "father of lies" (John 8:44).

The name Ishmael in the Hebrew means "God will hear" as taken from 3458 in the Strong's Concordance translation. The name derives from the combination of 8085 and 410.

8085 shama - means to hear intelligently.

410 el - is the short version of the Almighty.

Certainly in a bit of a strange way paradoxically the tattoo on does have a hidden message to we the survivors. I interpret it prophetically from God's point of view, not the killer's, to be saying to this generation that people need love and want to be heard.

For those of you who don't know what a paradox is, it is a statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth. How absurd for a mass-murder to somehow make and express a truth. That God heard the cry of this broken, humiliated, and miserable young man's heart. Yet nobody else did, at least not to the extent of taking the initiative to help him.

The other paradoxical self-contradictory and seemingly false proposition to be considered is the possible fact that other youth were cruel and unkind to Cho. By no means does that give him the right to respond in kind or kill. Nevertheless there is some contributory negligence, even if miniscule on many peoples part, which when compounded can eventually amount to something explosive as we now know.

The reclusive and question mark kid exhibited strange behavior but in some similarly strange way sent a message to society that we need not be excessively snobish, self-absorbed, and self-righteous. When people are hurting around us, we need to not judge them by outward appearance but consider what inner issues might really be going on within that is troubling them. This is the prophetic message to our generation at the death of Cho.
