For almost all U.S. firms, a criminal record check is considered as standard procedure in the recruitment process for new employees. This means that almost all business organizations in the United States conduct criminal record searches of their potential employees before offering them employment. As a result, state governments and the courts within a state have placed it upon themselves to be the providers of information with regard to criminal records within their jurisdiction. The good news is that searching for criminal records and any background information has become very convenient, because all state governments provide this information online.

How to conduct a criminal record search online

Usually, the first step in gaining access to criminal records or background information on people online is for people to submit a request for the record of a person from every jurisdiction where the person has lived. After doing so, people then also need to request the records from federal authorities, which can help them gain access to accurate and extensive information from both sources. After making the request, people asking for the records then need to pay any required fee imposed by either the state or the federal government. In making a request, people should be very specific, which means that as much as possible, the request should contain very specific information that include the person's legal name, his social security number, the person's date of birth, race, past addresses, and prior names if any.

Types of online criminal record searches

If people conducting the search need instant information on a person's criminal record, the type of online search they should do is the Instant search. This is because doing so can give them instant access to a person's criminal records, which could only be a few minutes after they made the request. However, the information that is provided on this kind of search is fairly limited and not all state governments or authorities provide Instant searches on their web sites. On the other hand, people who need more extensive information on a person's criminal record should do a Delayed search, wherein the records that were requested would take more time to be completed.

Usually, firms gain access to the criminal record of a potential employee from a number of sources, among which the most commonly used is the Internet, as state and federal authorities now offer people access to criminal records from their web sites. Given this, the ease by which criminal record searches can be done online, it can then be expected that criminal record searches will continue to become one of the most integral steps in the recruitment process among firms in the country.
