Raptors Need a New Groove

Totonto’s Raptor’s Talk blogger calls the team on its inconsistent game and shares a few ideas for some new moves. The blogger can’t speculate how the Raptor’s will fair this season. “When they are gunning on all cylinders, they are a tough team, but when the shots aren’t falling, they are worse than the Wolves.”

The post lists some “glaring holes” in the Raptor’s armour including lack of interior scoring, low post defense, and no offensive game plan. “Barring any trades, with the current roster, the only thing the Raptors can do to improve… is to put in some new plays.” With that, the blogger diagrams his ideas and suggests the team add at least one to start with. “Hopefully this trickles up to Mitchell…and we see something against the Jazz… they are bad boys!”

City to Jump on the VoIP Bandwagon?

In a recent post Blog TO reveals The City of Toronto’s consideration of ditching Bell Canada for Voice over IP (VoIP), which turns phone conversation into digital data and transmits it over an Internet connection. “VoIP services are typically considerably cheaper… and often include many perks such as free call display and voice mail…as well as low long-distance calling rates.”

The post reveals that the City’s 5-year contact with Bell Canada is coming to an end and the government management committee is “considering the proposal to retender the contract and to save up to $1.7 mln a year by going digital with a VoIP phone company.” There are issues that come with such a big switch. It’s a complicated task and “might not go over smoothly in the time left before the Bell contract expires.” The new technology also has a few glitches and is less reliable. Still, the City of Mississauga staff have been using it for five years and “claim it has been a problem-free solution.”

Leaf Players Riled by Avery’s Attitude

HockeyNation, a blog tracking Canadian hockey teams, asks in a recent post if New York Ranger Sean Avery will be called for his pre-game sparring with the Leafs. Reports are that “Avery and the Leafs Darcy Tucker and Jason Blake exchanged words and shoves, after Avery reportedly directed his comments towards Blake.” There’s no audio available of the spat and Tucker has simply described the comments as “classless.”

The post links to a video in which Don Cherry expresses his “contempt for Avery prior to the puck drop and again during his coach’s corner segment.” Toronto’s The Fan 560 also broadcast a story on the incident, upsetting Avery’s agent. Avery has a “history with the discipline office of the NHL, frequently for his on ice behaviour” or for mouthing off in bad taste and “at times has been alleged to be racist.”

Tofurama, Chinese Style

I Can’t Believe I’m Back in Toronto sings the praises of Simon’s Wok, a Buddhist vegetarian restaurant, the blogger’s favourite Chinese restaurant in the city. “They do not cook with garlic, onions, or green onions, but you never miss them because everything is tasty, colourful, and ungreasy.” The restaurant serves up a plethora of “mock meats” including duck, goose, and chicken. “The vegetarian goose is basically yuba rolled into long cigar-like tubes and deep-fried so that the outside is crisp and the inside is layered and juicy.”

The blogger raves in the post about the freshness of the ingredients, the flavours, and “the most delicious fried rice I've ever had.” The dinner for two came to $25. Simon's Wok is located at 797 Gerrard Street East.
