Take It To The Xtreme

Anyone tried an 'extreme' sport? Wave-riding, bungee-ing, cliff diving? No? Me neither. I do have another extreme to tell you about though - extreme 'self-care'. It's all the rage in fashionable circles ;-). What is it? Exactly what it says - taking extremely good care of you.

Selfishness, self-indulgence, self-centred? No. Pampering, treats, pleasure? Yes! And why not? Why do we only allow ourselves a 'treat' when we've done a zillion tasks? 'I shall sit down for 3 minutes and drink my cup of tea when I have done the ironing, made lunch, vaccuumed, finished the work I brought home, moved the house 3 inches to the left.' Etc etc

Does this sound at all familiar? Why on earth do you need to do penance in order to enjoy a soak in the bath or sitting reading a book uninterupted for an hour? 'But the ironing won't do itself you know'. Bah. The ironing can wait. Nothing, I repeat, nothing is more important than you and your health. You know yourself that when you keep up a frantic pace of life your health suffers.

How about this? One night in the week which is solely for you. No housework, no work, no 'gotta be somewhere, do something, meet someone'. Lovely. Alternatively, you could work like a maniac for days on end, then collapse exhausted for a week and nothing will get done. How many times have you felt you needed a rest but kept going and going and then fallen ill?

Extreme self care is not about being selfish and ignoring the things that have to be done. It is about taking care of the machine that gets it all done - you. Your body, mind and spirit need a break. In olden times the work had to stop when the light went. These days we can work 24-7 if we want to. Oh yip.

There are a thousand and one ways to fill your days with stuff to do. How much of your day is filled with doing something lovely for yourself? Do you plan it, look forward to it, take joy from it? Or do you 'allow' it as a guilty pleasure - I've cleaned the house from top to bottom so I deserve a bath. Or allow yourself a night in front of the telly not because you want to, but because you're too exhausted to move?

My big treat to myself is reading a magazine in a hot bubbly bath until I go crinkly - marvellously indulgent! It was brought home to me just how much I loved to do this when we had the bathroom done recently - I had no bathroom suite at all for a couple of days and the return of the bath was much looked forward to and savoured. Mmmmmm.

Imagine you are planning a treat for a loved one. How much pleasure do you get from making them happy? Now imagine that loved one is you. What are you going to do for yourself today?
