What Your Child Is Really Doing On The Internet - Part Four

Is your child a terrorist? It's a shocking question, but there's a very good reason you should pay close attention to the question.

In February of 2007, a Columbine area teen was arrested after authorities discovered he had pictures of himself holding guns on his MySpace page.

The plot thickens:

An independent analyst found that some groups are using MySpace as a fertile breeding ground to spread their message and recruit members.

For example, a young man from Brooklyn seems to be a perfectly normal teenager. His MySpace page says that he is 19 years old, weighs 190 lbs, doesn't drink, loves bagels and wants to be detective.

But you know what else he says? That he wants to die "as a martyr". Now, of course, that on its own is no reason for concern.

However, some MySpace blogs refer to the 19 terrorists who attack the American on Sept 11, 2001 as the "Magnificent 19".

And ABC News reports that the terrorist group "Al Qaida" has switched over form using secret internet forums and bulletin boards and is now conducting their activities on MySpace.

And CBS news reported in April of 2006 that police arrested five teenage boys after discovering plans for a school shooting. These plans were hatched on MySpace.

Could Columbine Have Been Prevented?

Always be 100% aware of what your kids are doing online. I've said it a thousand times now and it's finally sinking in to parents around the globe.

Some people may think it's wrong to "spy on your kids". Consider the alternative. What if you happen to unearth a plot for a school shooting? What if your "snooping" saves lives? Is it still wrong?

Some parents will always believe that their kids deserve 100% personal privacy. But others are starting to recognize the benefits of being 100% aware online.

Nobody wants to have to spy on their kids online activities and become 100% aware. But consider the alternative.
