Climbing rocks and cliffs has become a popular sport in the United States. Rock climbing needs not only special skills and endurance but also good rock climbing equipment. The necessary equipment include helmet, rope, shoes, harness, chalk, chalk bag, karabiners, and belay device.

The most important piece of rock climbing equipment is the helmet. It protects your head from falling debris, and also guards you from bumps and bruises if you happen to bang against the rock face. A rope is another essential object for rock climbing. The length of the rope should be at least 50 to 60 m, with a diameter of 10 or 11 mm. Also make sure that the rope can be stretched a bit under tension; this is essential in order to protect a climber in the event of a fall.

Rock climbers use special kind of shoes that are stiff and fit like a glove. A harness is a safety climbing device which is usually attached to a rope. This is worn around your thighs and waist to make sure that you don't fall off the rock. Chalk is used to rub on your hands for a better grip. This is kept in the chalk bag which is attached to the harness with hooks called karabiners (also known as biner and krab). A belay device is another important rock climbing equipment, which is used to hold a climber's rope.

Before going on a rock climbing expedition, it is essential to get basic guidelines from an experienced instructor. He can give you lessons about how to use rock climbing equipment safely. A detailed knowledge about the safety equipment is important for safe climbing. There are several books that provide excellent information about rock climbing and the equipment needed. When searching for rock climbing equipment, an experienced instructor or a sales person can help you a lot. You can buy rock climbing equipment from various online shops as well.
