GUITARISTS BEWARE: Michael Johnson's Olympic 200m record Ripped to shreds!

The Beijing 2008 Olympics have been a rare spectacle, one to be noted with great precision. Records are being broken and made, while at the same time history is being written. All of these things cannot go unnoticed.

If you are anything like the rare few people that always see a lesson in everything going on, then you are on the right track. But if you are not, don't worry, that is why you are reading this. Last night, a Jamaican by the name of Usain Bolt shuttered Michael Johnson's 200m record.

Not only did he break the record, he blew it up into a million pieces never to be found again. Michael's time was 19:62 while the 21 year old's (yes he is only 21) time was 19:30, how about that for record breaking time?

Michael's record was set 12 years ago, but that is not the only spectacular thing. Usain also managed to do what Carl Lewis did in 1984; not only did he win the 200m dash but the 100m sprint. Now how about that, is that short of phenomenal or what?

Ok, you are probably waiting to find out what all this has to do with being a guitar player. It is always a good idea to look at things around you to see what you can learn or how you can better yourself. In this case, there are a few things that come to our attention; the record that was set, how long it took to be broken and the person that broke it.

The Set Record

The record that was set 12 years ago can be related to any veteran guitarist known to be the best. Nothing wrong with that, keep reading.

When it Was Set

It was set 12 years ago, that is quite a long time if you really think about it. Bet it was thought to be unbeatable over the years.

The Person that broke it

You look at this guy and you don't see a young Michael, nevertheless, he still managed to do what all other people before him had failed to do in twelve years. When Usain was asked if he believed he could break the record, he said no.

Lesson to be Learned

So we have our so called "great guitarist" who people think can never have anyone play better than he does. He plays so beautifully he could make Zeus cry with tears of joy. This goes on for years until a little protégée appears from no where, replacing the great guitar player.

Fellow guitarists, this isn't rocket science, stop stunting your growth by comparing yourselves to the greats. That is all they are, greats, and nothing else. The more you say you can't play like so and so, the further you will get from becoming successful.

Conclusion

Even if you might not believe, keep pushing yourself forward, one day you will finally play the guitar like the greats, if not BETTER. After all, if Usain did what people before him had failed to do in twelve years; you most certainly can achieve greatness, even greater that the greats themselves.
