10 Steps To Regaining Control In The Work Place

1 - Organize & Prioritize:

It's wise to arrange your schedule in a priority order. Getting the most difficult and time consuming projects out of the way first will greatly reduce the stress level we often experience at the end of our day. Take a few minutes at the end of your day to prepare your agenda for the following day, a daily planner is a great organizational tool for tasks such as this. After you prepare your agenda, take a moment to organize your desk and put things in order. Nobody wants to start their day walking into a mess.

2 - Set Realistic Goals:

When setting goals be certain they are realistic and you can accomplish the goals within a realistic time-frame. If you find you have time to spare at the conclusion of your project, offer a little more than the recipient expected. This is always a win.. win situation! You come out smelling like a rose when you deliver more than originally promised.

3 - Focus On The Whole Picture:

Often times we prepare an agenda or to do list, and neglect to schedule time to return important calls or e-mails. Communication is essential in today's world of business, be certain to schedule a time period during each day to return calls and answer your e-mails.

4 - Health & Nutrition:

Get an ample amount of sleep, eat healthy, snack healthy, and exercise! If you have to get up a few minutes earlier to make sure you have time for breakfast, then do it. It's a proven fact that eating breakfast results in better productivity. I don't mean grab a donut and a cup of joe on the way to work. It takes about two minutes to zap a package of instant oatmeal in the microwave (less time than stopping in the local donut shop on your way to work). Add a piece of fruit and a glass of juice to your breakfast and you'll be energized and ready to start your day.

5 - Eliminate Stress:

Do you feel overwhelmed at work? Unrealistic deadlines, unbearable co-workers or boss, do you feel stressed because of a combination of responsibilities at work and at home? Identifying what stresses you out is half the battle in eliminating the problem. If you experience consistent difficulty with a co-worker, or your boss, document it each time a problem occurs. Address the situation with the appropriate person. I once had a boss that constantly looked over my shoulder. I requested a meeting with my boss and discussed my work history and accomplishments with him. I explained that I was concerned that the constant interruptions were going to affect my productivity. I assured him that I would immediately call him if I needed his help, and told him to feel free to give me a call if he needed an update. After that meeting he recognized he could back off without worrying about the project being completed on time.

6 - Don't Sweat The Small Stuff:

When we're tense, every little thing can bother us. Evaluate what is really eating at you and disregard the rest. If you're racing for an insignificant task that can be postponed until later, then take a break. Getting up to stretch or taking a short walk will help you to refocus on your goals. If you're staring blankly at the computer, get up and get a drink of water, or find another task that takes less time and effort. Don't allow frustration to fester and get the best of you.

7 - Reevaluate Unrealistic Goals:

Avoid setting yourself up for failure when setting your goals, set goals that are attainable and can be accomplished. Don't try to force yourself to achieve an un-achievable task just to impress others. Recognizing what we can deliver is essential to our success and reputation. If you have a large project, enlist someone to help you, or divide the project into tasks with time frames that can result in success.

8 - Indulge Yourself In Well Deserved Breaks:

How many times have you said "I can't take a break right now... there's just no time"? When we don't allow ourselves to take a break it results in wasted effort. Taking a break allows our minds to refresh and opens our eyes to see things in a fresh perspective. Our bodies require brief intermissions to recharge. Take a break, eat a piece of fruit if it's been a while since your last meal. This small indulgence can assist your body to recharge and refocus on your business at hand. Feeding our bodies a small nutritious snack also feeds our minds and allows us to perform more productively.

9 - Delegate:

Don't try to be a one-man-band. Avoid trying to fulfill a job that requires more than one person. The old adage holds true... "We can accomplish more together than one man can alone". Don't underestimate "Team Work". Delegating multiple tasks to multiple people, results in good time management. When we overload on our workload we become unproductive.

10 - Don't Allow Distractions To Interfere With Your Productivity:

Business often demands strict deadlines. Minimize distractions when you're confronted with this kind of pressure. Allow calls to go to voice mail, or ask the receptionist to take messages during these time frames. Focus on the goals before you and use time management wisely. Don't allow yourself to burnout, when you're on a tight schedule, keep some fruit or nutritious snacks handy, and don't forget to stay hydrated. Our bodies perform better with these bare essential.
