The ancestors of the Nseries - Nokia mobile phones take over the world

When Nseries mobile phones first hit the shelves, everyone basically went, 'Ooh, nice!' Right from the early days, it was clear this new breed of mobile phones was something new, combining sleek looks with mind-bending (for its time, anyway) power. They became the ultimate multimedia mobile phones, and people flocked to them in droves. Over time, Nokia expanded the range, adding more features and cool stuff, until today, they are regarded as some of the best mobile phones in the world.

That view is unlikely to change with the release of two new Nokia Nseries mobile phones: the gorgeous Nokia N85, and the frankly awesome Nokia N96.

Videodrome - Nokia N96

Every Nokia Nseries mobile phone has had one killer gimmick, one thing it's been known for. The N91 was the first with a built-in hard drive. The N95 was the first Nokia mobile phone with a 5 megapixel camera. Well, the Nokia N96 has not one, but two killer gimmicks. Before we get to them, however, let's take a quick look at the other features on this so-called king of mobile phones. Like its predecessor the N95, the Nokia N96 has a 5 megapixel camera, GPS and super-fast internet access. What it brings to the party, though, are two things that are new to Nokia mobile phones. First, the Nokia N96 has 16Gb of internal memory, something not seen on any of their previous mobile phones. Secondly is its big focus: video. The Nokia N96 is, essentially, a portable cinema in your hand, and a mobile TV, since it comes complete with BBC iPlayer, making the Nokia N96 the first mobile phone in history that lets you stream AND download videos from iPlayer, straight out of the box.

Nokia N85 - a wolf in sheep's clothing?

The Nokia N96 really is one of the most powerful mobile phones on the planet... but some say its little brother, the Nokia N85 is even better. To be fair, that idea has some merit, because there's not a huge list of differences between the two mobile phones. The Nokia N85 doesn't have DVB-H mobile TV or iPlayer, and the internal memory is down from 16Gb to 74Mb. But let's analyse those things. First off, the lack of DVB-H on the Nokia N96 is NOT a big deal, since that standard isn't supported in Europe yet. As for the lack of iPlayer, the version for mobile phones is freely downloadable (or will be soon), so it not coming preinstalled on the Nokia N85 is only a TINY hindrance. And whilst the N96 has a bigger screen, the one on the Nokia N85 is far superior, as it's an OLED screen, making it brighter, more colourful, and all round better. Plus, it seems HIGHLY likely that the Nokia N85 will be the vastly cheaper of these two mobile phones, so by that logic, you can't really lose if you go for the Nokia N85!
