So just how much do you understand when it comes down knowing about colour from your printer, camera, and monitor, because they all need to handle colour in the same way.

The theory of colour spaces is very complex and frightening, but you do need to know the basics for getting the most out of your images. A colour space is the range of colours a device or program can reproduce, and by default photoshop is set up to use the wrong one, most people are unaware of this. First things first you need to make sure you are working in the right one, or correct colour space. You'll need to check with your camera and check if there's and adobe RGB or sRGB settings anywhere in your menus. If your lucky and there is, then set it to adobe RGB. You don't have to worry if you haven't there is a way round this.

You need to be shooting in RAW, then you don't need to worry about the camera settings, You will find out that what ever comes out of the CCD sensor is colour space neutral, when using adobe camera raw you'll also notice that it is mapped to a colour space. Next open ACR and select adobe RGB from within the space menu. You must also check and presets which you might have saved, open them and check that they all use this setting.

Okay now you'll need to bring up the colour setting in photoshop, go to edit / photoshop > colour settings and choose the north America prepress 2 setting from within the settings menu, next step under colour management policies set your RGB to convert to work on RGB, at this point you'll need to also make sure you have the lower boxes ticked, this will bring up and very useful warning if or when you open an old sRGB image or file. No need to panic if your using elements there is a setting in there. Select "Always optimize for printing" this can be find in the colour settings dialog.

Last step, you'll need to go to the print preview (or print) and open the correct menu this is where your printer options are. You'll find there should be an adobe RGB settings, you'll need to use that. If not you'll have to experiment to see which settings gives you the most accurate results. For the best results you'll have to also experiment with colour handling and rendering intent if you have them, then it's just a case of pressing the print test thumbnails using different settings to assess the colours.
