Your doctor may not want to recommend Crohn's disease diets to you when you are first diagnosed, but it might be something you wish to investigate. There is some research to back the thinking behind following crohn's diets, but most of the support comes from other sufferers who have found that eliminating certain foods has helped them feel better.

You probably already know that certain foods seem to trigger some of your symptoms, and those might be the first items you'll want to remove when planning such a diet. You can begin to take away foods that might bother you to see if anything helps you or not.

Most people start by taking milk and milk products out of their daily diet. This can be tough, but you can do it. You might want to try soy milk instead as an alternative. You have to also make sure anything else made with milk is gone as well. That means you should avoid cheese that has not been aged, and products like yogurt and ice cream. Suffering from lactose intolerance is a common problem for those with Crohn's. Remember though, you will be losing the calcium and vitamin D that you get from this food group, so you may have to find ways to replace that in your diet.

Some high fiber foods will aggravate Crohn's, and this includes many of your favorite vegetables. If you don't eat a lot of them, this won't be a problem for you. However, many find this hard to do, but it might be the source of some of your discomfort. You may hear a lot about how these fibers are good for the diet, and they are for those who do not have to deal with Crohn's. This is another instance where it is a good idea to make sure you are replacing the vitamins and minerals that you would normally get from these foods.

Grains and oats are also a problem that can make symptoms worse for some patients with Crohn's, and it is very hard to eliminate these completely. This means giving up almost every type of bread out there, and that is a huge lifestyle change. You have to avoid the breadings on some of your favorite foods, and you will find that restaurant choices become very restricted. You have to learn to read ingredient labels very well, and to decipher those odd words you see at the end of the list. Some are oats and grains, and others are preservatives, which should also be avoided.

It's always a good idea to give you doctor a clue as to what you are doing so that they may let you know what vitamins you might want to take. Crohn's disease diets can be hard to follow. They don't always give you what your body needs, and you already know that nutrition is a problem for you when eating regular foods, so this is going to make it worse. You should start by eliminating one food item at a time to see if you feel better or not. That way you know what bothers you, and what you can keep eating without adding to your problems.
