PMDD, or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, is a more severe form of PMS. The symptoms experienced by sufferers of both conditions tend to be very similar. The difference is that, for those suffering from PMDD, those symptoms are more extreme and debilitating.

If you suffer from PMDD, you might experience the following symptoms, starting about a week before your period begins:

* Feelings of sadness or depression that won't go away.

* Feelings of extreme anxiety or edginess.

* Mood swings, including periods of weepiness.

* Irritability, and a short temper.

* Lack of interest in your usual activities.

* Feelings of fatigue or lethargy.

* Feelings of being overwhelmed, or out of control.

* A change in your sleep patterns. You don't usually have problems sleeping but, before your period, you have a hard time getting to sleep, or staying asleep. Or, conversely, you find yourself sleeping too much.

* Changes in your eating habits. Either you find yourself eating too much, you're suffering from a lack of appetite, or you're craving specific foods.

Just as consuming caffeine can worsen some of the symptoms of PMS, caffeine can also make certain PMDD symptoms more severe.

Cutting back on caffeine, especially a week or two before your period starts, can help alleviate symptoms like anxiety, nervousness, and irritability.

Also, if PMDD has caused you to have problems sleeping, caffeine could be making those problems worse. Cutting back on caffeine will help you to get a better night's sleep. And getting enough rest will help to improve your mood during the day.

So, why not switch to decaffeinated coffee, tea, and soda. And, instead of dark chocolate, try satisfying your sweet tooth with white chocolate instead.

Decreasing your caffeine intake is a simple step that can go a long way towards helping you deal with PMDD.
