Millions of people today are suffering from a very dangerous disease that can cripple their minds, break their hearts and may even lead to death. This disease is often overlooked because it slowly affects the mind causing its bearer to feel worthless, abandon and in some cases less attractive. The disease I am talking about is low self-esteem. There have been countless studies and researches done on the topic of low self-esteem and yet millions of people suffer from this inner mind disease.

There is no single treatment for building self-esteem. However, there are at least five basic things one can apply to one's self to truly understand the true value of 'you' the person. The five things are as follows:

1. Understand your role. This relates to where you fit within society. We all have roles to perform within this cycle of life and despite you may feel that your role is not significant it is vital because it is inter-woven into the fabric of life. Your role in life would also relate to your contribution to society especially when it is positive.

2. Know your position. Where you fit into the scheme of things is vital, because this will help to define your goals in life. Ever so often, we fail to realize that nature has laws and we go through life thinking that we can make it without understanding its laws. It is vital that we know our position in life so that we can achieve the things we strive for.

3. Be Assertive. Do not "give up" or "give in" easily, because this will make you feel inadequate most of the time. You are a valuable member of the human race and therefore your assertiveness should be evident at all times. You should be able to stand up for whatever you believe in and avoid individuals who tend to put you down. Being assertive will allow you to better know yourself over time.

4. Do not try to please everyone. Your self-esteem can be shattered if you try to please everyone at every given time. It is not selfish to think about 'you' as an important and contributing person in society. If you try to please everyone at any given time, you may have to lower your standards to accommodate some. In every culture there are leaders and followers. However, this does not mean you have to lower your standards to follow a "leader" because of peer pressure or some other reason.

5. Your mind is priceless. There is an old saying; "A mind is a terrible thing to waste". This is true because if you do not put your mind to work it will not be productive. The excessive abuse of drugs and alcohol often alter the mind, causing individuals to feel inadequate and less productive in society. The abuse of drugs also make the individual find it difficult to separate fact from fiction. A low self-esteem may lead to drug and alcohol abuse, because these intoxicants tend to trick the user with a false sense of hope.

Your true worth lays within you, therefore you must display inner strength (spiritual and mental) at all times. Be vigilant regarding those who manipulate the mind causing you to feel lesser than your true inner worth. Nature has blessed you with an abundance of creative avenues and it is up to you to find your creative path.
