Eight of our 43 U.S. Presidents have died in office; and of those seven were elected in the twenty year cycle beginning in 1840, and ending in 1960. Is there truly a curse on U.S. Presidents who win elections in years ending in Zero?

Numerology is a science of cycles, so when we find a cycle like this among people's lives, we try to give it a closer look. Here then is a detailed list of this curious cycle.

1840

William Henry Harrison is elected our 9th president. He gives an inaugural speech of one hour and 45 minutes, and catches a cold. It turns into pneumonia and he dies on April 4th, 1841. He is the first president to die in office, and has the shortest presidency on record; just 30 days.

1860

Abraham Lincoln is elected our 16th president. He completes his first term and is re-elected in 1864. He is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater on April 15th, 1865; just 5 days after Robert E. Lee's surrender ended the Civil war.

1880

James A. Garfield is elected our 20th president. He is shot by his assassin Charles J. Guiteau, at the Washington train station on July 2nd, 1881 less than four months into his presidency. Garfield lived for another eleven weeks, but repeated probing for the bullet caused infection to set in, and he died of blood poisoning on September 19th, 1881.

1900

William McKinley was elected our 25th president in 1896. He runs and wins re-election in 1900. He is shot by his assassin, Leon F. Czlogosz at a public reception in Buffalo, New York on September 6th, 1901. He lived another eight days and died on September 14th, 1901.

1920

Warren G. Harding is elected our 29th president. While returning from a trip to Alaska in June 1923, Harding arrives in San Francisco suffering from food poisoning. He develops pneumonia and dies suddenly on August 2nd, 1923.

1940

Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected our 32nd president in 1932. He wins re-election in 1936, 1940, and 1944. He dies in office on June 12th, 1945 of a cerebral hemorrhage.

1960

John F. Kennedy is elected our 35th President. He is shot and killed, presumably by Lee Harvey Oswald in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas on November 22nd, 1963.

1980

Ronald Regan is elected our 40th president. Two months into his presidency, he is shot by John Hinckley Jr. in Washington D.C. on March 30th, 1981. Regan is critically wounded, but the bullet misses his heart, and emergency surgery saves him. Regan survives, and runs for and wins another term in 1984. Regan breaks the chain of seven presidents elected in the twenty year cycle to die in office.

2000

George W. Bush is elected our 43rd president. He won re-election in 2004, so the clock is still ticking on him. He has another 21 months in office.
