Collagen Injections

Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that provides support to various parts of the human body: the skin, the joints, the bones and the ligaments. In the cosmetic and rejuvenation world, collagen has a different purpose. Injectable Collagen is used primarily to fill wrinkles, lines and scars on the face and sometimes the neck.
The procedure for injectable collagen is fairly straight forward. Firstly, a reputable cosmetic dermatologist will test a small sample of the injectable substance to confirm that you are not allergic. Once your cosmetic dermatologist gives you the green light, you are ready to move forward with your treatment.
The next step is to inject the collagen using a very fine needle inserted at several points along the edge of the treatment site. If you are sensitive and hate the slightest level of discomfort, you might want to ask your cosmetic dermatologist for a local or topical anaesthesia.

You might want to note that since part of the substance is salt water that will be absorbed by your body within a few days, your doctor will slightly overfill the area.

What should you expect after treatment?

Following the treatment, you may notice some minor discomfort, stinging or throbbing in the injected area. In some cases you might experience some bruising or swelling, but it is usually minor. Any redness that appears in the injected site usually disappears within 24 hours. However, if you are particularly fair-skinned this redness may persist for a week or more. Tiny scabs may also form over the needle-stick areas; don't worry, as they will usually heal quickly.
No bandaging is needed (so your little secret is your own) and you are free to eat, drink, and wear foundation with sunblock protection shortly thereafter.
In some cases, there may be some temporary swelling and redness in the treated area which should dissipate within a few days. If these symptoms persist, contact your doctor immediately.

How long will you keep your new look?

The longevity of your collagen treatment will depend on your lifestyle and physical characteristics. Another factor that comes to play is the area of the body treated. As a rule of thumb, the injected material is likely to disappear faster in areas that are more affected by muscle movement.
