The number of cases related to auto theft has increased over the years, and has prompted many car manufacturers and security firms to design and manufacture advanced auto security systems. Auto security systems are designed to prevent auto thefts, to track stolen vehicles and provide conclusive evidence against the accused in auto theft cases.

Almost all automobiles have pre-installed security systems such as automatic engine lock and central locking to prevent unauthorized access. These devices use electronic components that can detect anything that touches the external parts of an automobile, or when a different key is inserted into its lock. The security system sounds an alarm to alert the owner in such cases.

Apart from pre-installed security systems, other security systems are also available on the market that can be installed to provide enhanced security to automobiles. These systems may include satellite-tracking devices that can pinpoint the exact location of a stolen car and alert the owner or cops via radio signals. These systems are smartly disguised to look as a car component, which makes it difficult for the car thief to detect and remove these devices. The latest auto security systems use radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to detect the movements of stolen automobiles.

Surveillance devices such as digital cameras can be installed inside garages and parking lots to record actual pictures of car thieves, which can be used as evidence in the court of law. Live images from digital cameras can also be viewed directly by security personnel stationed in a control room. These types of systems are proving very helpful for law enforcement authorities, which can witness the crime; as opposed to "blind" crimes, where the evidence only takes the shape of third party or witness testimonies. Remote video surveillance enables a user to directly control many on-site devices that cannot be operated because of lack of labor.
