How healthy is your state?  Recent studies have compared 22 different factors to determine what makes up the healthiest places to live in the United States.  The most obvious ways to measure would be air quality, stress level, and access to healthy nutritional foods.  But there are other factors that you would find quite surprising such as AIDS rate, % of smokers, and safety belt usage.  Read on to find out about the top ten healthiest and unhealthiest places to call home.

If you live in Minnesota, congratulations!  You can boast that your home town is in the healthiest state in the country!  This is largely to due great health care coverage and the number of adults who exercise regularly.  The runner up is...New Hampshire because of its scores for the lowest sexually transmitted disease rates as well the lowest level of teenage pregnancies.  Coming in 3rd place is another New England state, Vermont with the lowest number of new AIDS cases reported.  Other top healthy states include in the appropriate order: Maine, Massachusetts, Iowa, Nebraska, Hawaii, North Dakota, and Rhode Island.  These results are not very shocking to me because I have had the pleasure of visiting most of them and they seem quite delightful.

If we cover the healthiest states, we must reveal their counterparts-those unfortunate unhealthy states.  Mississippi tops the list for numerous reasons such as largest obesity population and highest infant mortality rate.  Not too far behind is Louisiana with the 2nd highest age-adjusted death rate and the worst access to primary care among others. The 3rd place title goes to...New Mexico mainly for its rapidly declining health care system.  Rounding out the top ten are in consecutive order: Nevada, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Alabama, and last but not least Delaware.

My home state is not on any of these lists which can be viewed as a positive or a negative depending on whether you look at the glass half empty or half full.  Which specific city you dwell in can also have an impact on your quality of life.  When deciding on the best relocation spot, many factors should be taken into account.  Sometimes, we have no choice on where we hang our hats due to our occupation or financial situation.  The more we know about living a healthy life, the better.
