With Christmas here and a new year ready to unfold, do you wonder how many gifts will gather dust on shelves, or worse, be returned? When it's all said and done, how many of the things we've given or received are truly needed? Of course, there are those precious moments when a child's eyes light up as they eagerly tear into a package they're delighted with. But, does your sister really need that fluffly red scarf set? Will Uncle Stan even use that sock warmer?

While the holidays can fill you with an immense amount of joy and gratitude, the stress of gift giving can stretch your nerves as thin as your budget. We've all heard the plea "I really don't need anything" and more times than not, it's true. So what do you get these individuals? Our country is the largest consuming nation on the planet. We have so much stuff, we can't even give it away! Billions survive on less than $2.00 a day, while we pack storage units and push free piles to end of the driveway. Thrift stores are at their breaking points. Shouldn't more thought of this go into our giving?

The other day I came across a picture on the internet that spoke so true. It was one of those moments where a picture is worth a thousand words and more. On one half was a brand new S.U.V., the kind that boasts "look at me, I have arrived!" On the other side, helpless and starving refugee children lying in the dirt. In bold, black letters across the front it screamed, Define Necessity. It made me cringe to the sad fact that 38,000 people die every day from lack of simple necessities. I searched the internet again until I found something so perfect, I wish I would have thought of it earlier. There are many reputable organizations that offer gifts to help others in need. You can click to buy a pair of school shoes for an orphaned child, goats for a Rwandan family struggling to escape poverty, even sponsor a rescued animal facing extinction. There are many ideas at various prices to fit your budget. Fill out who you would like the gift to be in honor of and they soon receive a certificate to proudly display.

These gifts continue to make a difference long after the holidays are over. So, when that next occasion comes when you don't quite know what to give, you have countless options right at your fingertips. Opening people's minds and hearts is the best gift of all. This year, make it a point to give something you will feel good about giving, as well as receiving. The best thing is knowing you are making someone else's future a little brighter and maybe even encouraging someone else to do the same.
