The Internet can be a dangerous place for children in a variety of ways. Pornography, explicit content, and unsolicited emails (spam) are a few of the many problems that can harm a child's experience on the Internet.

The Internet is a great source for learning, exploration, and opens a world of possibilities to children. However, this may also expose them to dangers as they hit the road exploring the information highway. Parents should be aware of these dangers and understand the steps to protecting their children.

Playing Defense While the problems are evident, the solutions may not always be so straight-forward. Many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) often have some type of safeguard in place to help block unwanted content from reaching your computer and your children. While this may work part of the time, it is not a 100% solution. Software based content filters offer more protection and configuration options, helping you to take control of the content being viewed on your personal computers.

Content filtering software lets you manage the way your Internet connection is being used by:

Monitoring the web pages viewed on your network

Denying access to web sites that have unwanted or questionable content

Restricting or allowing access at certain times of the day AllegroSurf also allows you to apply these restrictions differently to each computer on your network.

Not only can your children be exposed to dangers from browsing the Internet, but they may also receive the same harmful content through email. Spam email can contain much of the same explicit content as that found on the Web. Anti-spam Software has proved worthy of taking on the task of blocking intrusive spam from reaching your Inbox.

While the tools mentioned above may greatly help to protect your children, there are other very important steps to safe Internet surfing:

Educating your children to the dangers online and how to avoid

them is a great step to ensuring they benefit from the wealth of

information found online

Staying involved in their online activities and knowing what

they're doing might be the single most important strategy to

protecting your children.

The F.B.I. (Federal Bureau of Investigation) has put together "A Parent's Guide to Internet Safety" that was prepared using information from actual investigations involving child victims. This guide walks you through preventative steps and educates you on how to spot the warning signs that something may be compromising your Internet safeguards.
