Chicken wings are delicious, especially spicy chicken wings doused in tasty barbecue sauce. But, when it comes to golf, chicken wings aren't so tasty. In fact, a chicken wing is bad news all around. You have to stop the chicken wing in your golf swing!

What Is A "Chicken Wing?"

In golf, a chicken wing is when you fold your left wrist and arm during your swing. This means that you are letting your left wrist and arm go kind of limp right when the putter hits the ball.

An easy way to identify the chicken wing is to look at the left elbow. If, after swinging the club, your left elbow is way up in the air, we've got a chicken wing problem.

One thing about the chicken wing: you will NEVER see pros do it! Watch Tiger Woods, Mark O'Meara or any other pro golfer and you'll never see them do it, I guarantee.

Why Is The Chicken Wing So Bad?

When you do a chicken wing, you lose control of the swing. You have to keep control of your arm and wrist when the putter hits that ball or else it won't go where you want it to go, and you'll lose power. If you have a chicken wing, you end up with weak slices, and that's no good.

Another reason why the chicken wing is bad is that you need your shots to be consistent. The chicken wing and its lack of control hurt that consistency.

How To Stop The Chicken Wing

First off, keep a strong grip on the club. Often, a weak grip is to blame for the dreaded chicken wing. If you keep a strong grip on the club, it will help you make longer and more accurate shots. You'll have better control over your swing.

Here's a tip for making sure that you're grip is tight and you won't have to open the clubface during the swing: Look at your left hand. While you're gripping the club, you should be able to see the brand name on your left golf glove. You should also be able to see two knuckles.

To keep that chicken wing from ruining your shot, you have to keep your arms extended. The longer your arms are extended, the more power you have over the ball. Again, watch Tiger or any other pro and observe how their arms stay straight, which their body swivels.

Lots of amateurs make the mistake of letting their arms go past their chest when they swing. If you do this, you end up with your left elbow way up in the air... The Chicken Wing strikes again! If you go too far across your chest, trying to square the clubface for instance, you have to fold your left arm and wrist to hit the ball, and that's where you get the chicken wing.

Keep your arms straight when you swing and twist your body so that your arms cross your chest naturally. If you can do this right, you will release at just the right time.
