Throwing A Baby Shower

Baby showers are the lead-up to the big event, the time to celebrate the new arrival before the hard work of caring for the baby actually arrives. For expectant mothers, they can also be a "last hurrah" of sorts, a time to spend with friends and family members before the all-consuming baby responsibilities rob them of much of their free time. It's tough to hit the right pitch of joy and anticipation when throwing a baby shower, so it's no wonder so many expectant mothers, family members, and godparents approach them with a sense of trepidation.

So for throwing the shower, keep a few ideas in mind:

- The baby is the reason, but not necessarily the purpose of the shower. Having a child is a milestone in any woman's life, to say the least, and the shower is an opportunity to celebrate the mother as much as the child. Including baby pictures of the mother, looking back on her life as a single and then married woman, and featuring a salute to her own charms and strengths makes for both convivial atmosphere and warmhearted cheer. Giving gifts to the mother - even to any siblings - are a lovely way to look back on their lives so far, to commemorate their efforts while at the same time looking forward to the new arrival.

- Gifts don't have to be elaborate, and they don't have to be cheesy. There's an old saying that it's the thought that counts, but that's not entirely accurate. Giving a baby-specific gift is a nice thought, but the truly thoughtful gift is one that can be appreciated long after the baby has grown into childhood and beyond. Personalized gifts are a nifty way to create an instant keepsake, as they make any gift unique to the mother and child alike. There are any number of techniques, including engraving, monogramming, and inscription, that create the extra personal touch. Many gifts feature such added touches at little or no extra cost. And if nothing else, a baby gift should be as unique and delightful as the promise of new life.

- Give the party a theme, but don't be afraid to branch outside of that. Theme showers, for example "it's a boy," "it's a girl," or even "here we go again," are nice guidelines, but shouldn't be considered a rule. Giving gifts such as snuggly blankets, rocking horses, or diaper cakes - gifts applicable to either gender - cut across theme lines but are especially appreciated by parents who probably already dread the cost in time and money of furnishing the baby's material needs. They make good conversation fodder at the shower itself, too.

- Save the parents, save the shower. As mentioned above, parent saving gifts such as diaper cakes and bath time gift baskets help the parents stock up on supplies; in many ways, it's the same as putting money in their pockets, in the long run.
