Holiday Heaven - At A Price?

As the high street and the internet offer bigger and better holiday deals, it is no surprise that many are falling into the trap of borrowing to fund their excursions abroad. While a break away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life can be a god send, there may be a hefty price to pay - and it could last for some time!

As taxes soar, energy costs grow and general living costs continue to move higher., for many of us the pressure for a break becomes ever stronger. It is this subject (as well as Christmas spending) which appears to fall under the risk radar of many, with people willing to borrow as much as possible for the well earned break. Why not sit back, check out the best deals, and take your time.

While the borrowing market in the UK becomes ever more competitive, this is nothing compared to the cut throat travel industry, where margins are wafer thin and volumes are a must. The cost of holidays has been falling constantly for the last 10 years, with "package" holidays available from only a few hundred pounds if you are available at short notice.

Before looking at taking out a loan, or increasing your overdraft with the bank, it is vital that you check out:

· Your finances - how much (if any) can you realistically afford?
· Have you really got the best holiday deal around?

Do not forget that salespeople in this day and age expect you to fight tooth and nail for the best offers, they will not hand them to you on a plate. Play hard to get, know your budget, and be realistic about your aim. A holiday left unsold is a wasted investments, while a £100 return on a £500 holiday assists many of these holiday companies with their cashflow, thereby ensuring that they can survive.

Once you have a feel for the holiday market, and you know what you can realistically afford, then it is time to approach your bank about increasing that overdraft or taking out finance. If they see that you have thought the situation through there is more chance of you being successful, and getting that elusive, well earned break.

The only problem with finance assisted holidays is the payback when you return, although this will not necessarily be the first thing on your mind when you are laid back on the beach with the sun beating down!
