It's hard to believe that your body actually needs it when cholesterol gets so much bad press. There are two kinds of cholesterol in your body, good cholesterol also known as HDL cholesterol, and bad cholesterol or LDL cholesterol. In your body, cholesterol is required to create hormones, vitamin D and bile salts.

The bad cholesterol on the other hand can cause you many inconveniences. The main concern with LDL cholesterol is that it could put cholesterol onto artery walls that will create plaque. In turn, theplaque will narrow and block the arteries. This might cause blood flow to be blocked, which is bad news for your heart.

When it comes to cholesterol, there are many confusing terms being thrown around. Dietary cholesterol is one of those terms. You could believe that all dietary cholesterol is bad, but in fact dietary cholesterol doesn't raise blood cholesterol as much as you may believe. The two bad guys here are saturated fats and trans fatty acids.

So what you need to do when you think of cholesterol problems is to decrease your quantities of bad cholesterol. A very good way to achieve this is by changing your diets. As well as reducing foods with bad cholesterol such as meat, eggs, dairy and seafood, you could also eat other foods that could decrease LDL levels.

Trans fatty acids are found in a lot of packaged food. Microwave popcorn, hard stick margarine and a number of French fries from certain fast food chains are all responsible. You can cut down your assimilation of trans fatty acids that will all create bad cholesterol in your body, by eliminating these foods or finding better substitutes.

You can increase the quantity of good cholesterol in your body while decreasing the bad cholesterol. The reason for this is that the presence of good cholesterol in your body means that excess cholesterol will be taken back to the liver to be excreted out of your body. This means you need a lot of good cholesterol as high levels of good cholesterol can reduce danger of heart disease.

Everyday life modifications like eating foods rich in soluble fiber and monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats will contribute to increase good cholesterol levels. You could also increase the amount of physical activity in your every day life to decrease cholesterol levels. Another great solution is to limit alcohol intake to one glass per day for women and two a day for men.
