Some Facts About Colorado Avalanche Team

The Colorado Avalanche team got started in San Francisco and moved to Quebec in 1972. They started as Quebec Nordiques and were a top WHA (World Hockey Association) team. As the WHA folded in 1979, the Nordiques team joined the NHL. The team slowly shaped up into an exciting side with the players like Dale Hunter, Michael Goulet, Anton, Jacques Richard and Peter Stastny. They became an emerging team and within Quebec their rivalry with another Quebec team Montreal Canadiens was formed.

Hard times came to the Nordiques in the late 1980s with five straight years out of the playoffs. But the team continued to accumulate a flock of young star players like Joe Sakic, Valery Kamensky, Adam Foote, Mats Sundin and Ownd Nolan.

In 1995 the division champs Quebec Nordiques were moved to Denver due to their financial situation and there they got their current name Colorado Avalanche. With a new team management, the team started to pick up some of the NHL's star players, Patrick Roy of rival Montreal Canadiens being one of them. Their exciting team lineup got them their first Stanley Cup, a record for the first year of a team after repositioning.

The next few years saw Colorado Avalanche winning all the division titles. The Avalanche tickets were really the hardest to get during those times. The 2000-01 season started out as a mission for Ray Bourque who wanted to win the Stanley Cup at any cost in his final season and he led the team to winning the second Stanley Cup despite the absence of their star player Peter Forsberg. The team struggled during the next season as both Ray Bourque and Peter Forsberg were out. But they managed to win another division title that set a professional sports record for the most consecutive division titles.

The next season in 2002-03, Colorado Avalanche missed the division title by just one point and the same year Peter Forsberg bagged the Hart Trophy for the Most Valuable Player of the league (MVP). In 2003-04 season, with Patrick Roy retired, the Avalanche decided to add David Aebischer who became one of the top goalies in the NHL. In the next few seasons with the players like Joe Sakic and Paul Stastny in their side, Avalanche team worked hard to win the Cup.
