For many, many centuries, oysters have been considered one of the greatest aphrodisiacs. In other words, they are said to increase one?s sexual desire upon consumption. In fact, it was rumored that Casanova consumed more than 50 oysters ?on the half shell? a day in order to increase his libido.
So just when did oysters become this all encompassing food to help one increase their sex-drive? In looking far back into its history, aphrodisiac came from the time when the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, was said to be born of the sea. This caused many people to believe that any food from the sea has aphrodisiac properties.
As the years passed by, there was a belief also that anything resembling genitalia had sexual powers. Some classic examples are rhino horns, Ginseng, and oysters. There have also been countless tales written by early century writers about the out of control ways of women after they had wined and dined on giant oysters.
According to research done by the Food and Drug Administration, all of these supposed sexual effects that are caused by aphrodisiacs, oysters in particular, are based solely on myths and not fact. To date, there is no documented scientific data that proves that foods considered aphrodisiacs, when ingested, cause an increase in sexual desire.
So oysters may not cause an increase in libido, but many people have taking a liking to the mollusks. They eat them raw, steamed, canned, roasted, grilled, baked, and even fried. They have been shown to be one of the most well balanced foods. They contain proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. They are excellent sources of vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, C and D. They are ideal for anyone who is partaking in a low cholesterol diet, low calorie diet. Twelve raw oysters are only about 110 calories and contain a lot of the vitamins and minerals that are needed in today?s diet.
So while many people would like to believe that it is the oyster that is causing them to feel very much in the mood, science has made the point that there is no evidence to prove this. It very well could be that psychologically people want to greater sexual drive by eating oysters, they want to believe it so much, that they willed themselves to do so.
Whatever the reason that you decide to eat oysters, remember, it is our subconscious mind that makes us feel more sexual. But go ahead and enjoy those oysters as they are a very nutritious way to eating healthy.
