Hair colors used to be dangerous and ridden with chemicals that damaged the hair of most people. It was only an option that people with grey hair used out of necessity. Today however hair colors are less damaging and are used by youngsters as well as people looking to disguise their gray hairs. Coloring your hair can be a great and fun option when you are looking to change your over all look. However before you start be sure that the color you are opting to use actually suits your face.

Whether you're just looking for a change, or looking to cover up a few gray hairs, a new hair color can make you feel like a new person. But because hair color makes such a dramatic statement, it's important that you are fully informed and certain of your choice before you commit. You don't have to go to a beautician or an expensive salon to get the hair you want. Just get informed of your options and chose the right hair color, and you'll be a brand new you in no time, with no fuss, and no regrets.

If you have recently noticed a little bit of gray crowding in on your natural hair color, you have some thinking to do. If you choose to cover grey hairs, it is absolutely essential that you resolve to maintain it well, and frequently- nothing spoils a nice color job like silver roots. You also have to decide whether you want to match your hair color exactly, just to cover the grey, or if you want to add a little extra something to your overall tone. If you chose to alter your natural color, make sure you chose a tone that matches your overall complexion- true black, for instance, looks wrong on most people who weren't born with it. If you choose to stick with your natural color, make sure to test a small area for a match, first. If you are only beginning to go gray, you can probably get away with using semi-permanent dyes on a regular basis. However, as your graying progresses, you will eventually have to switch to permanent colors in order to really cover it. Again, make sure to test your permanent color on a small sample of hair first when they say permanent, they mean it, so you want your color to be right when you dye your hair.

If you aren't going gray, but just want a little change, you still need to think hard about your color for the best results. If you aren't sure what you want, long-term, try a temporary coloring agent on for size. It'll wash out within a few weeks, and you can see how a new color wears on you. If you're ready to commit to a permanent or semi-permanent color, make sure to apply with care. If you have extremely sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions to chemical products, you may want to seek professional assistance, or use a natural temporary alternative, such as henna.

As with everything you look to do with your hair, always try to opt for a natural alternative. Hair colors can be a great way to change the way you look but they often have strong oxidant chemicals that can damage your hair. The hair colors today are less damaging, but never the less they can still damage your hair.
