Neurofeedback is also known as EEG Biofeedback in some circles. The style, equipment and environment in which the neurofeedback therapy occurs varies widely between practitioners. There are many who purchase a simple neurofeedback machine with a pre-programmed settings that may work to reduce symptoms of a certain disorder or disease. Neurofeedback Therapy started almost 30 years ago with the treatment of high blood pressure, hypertension and stress related disorders. Neurofeedback therapy is also known to improve and alter brainwaves in different parts of the brain.

In a medical neurofeedback therapy practice. The neurofeedback is administered by a low level clinician and supportive therapy and other therapies are provided by a registered therapist or psychologist. A medical doctor is involved to help manage prescription levels and oversee care. This is most used in the treatment of ADHD where there is a large contingent of the population that opposes stimulant medication as the primary path of treatment. A medical neurofeedback clinic will also use medical grade neurofeedback equipment, medically trained staff and utilize diagnostic tools, like brain maps.

Neurofeedback Therapy performed by a sole practitioner can also use many of the commercially available, medical grade neurofeedback equipment and diagnostic tools. This type of therapy would provide more of a one on one type personalized service that many people require. Sole practitioners tend to be therapists first and have expanded their knowledge to include the use of neurofeedback.

Getting your own neurofeedback machine and performing the therapy on yourself is difficult and rarely successful unless prior training has been done. A personal neurofeedback machine for use in managing hypertension and anxiety after attending a professional therapist or medical clinic does work well. Treating your own attentional disorder like ADHD using your own neurofeedback machine will not work for a variety of reasons. Those machines will normally end up unused, gathering dust before too long. Also, most people will not invest in a higher quality, more expensive neurofeedback therapy systems, which immediately reduces successful treatment rate to nearly zero.
