Singers: Learn Breath Support

Whether you would like to be a professional singer one day, or you would simply like to improve your singing, you will find that one of the things that you need to think about when you are interested in improving your voice is breath support. At the most basic level, breath support is the conscious use of your body to aid the quality of your voice. You can even use it to help your speaking voice as well as your singing voice.
Try this technique for learning about breath support to help you when you sing or speak. Place your hands on each side of your body so you can feel your muscles expand and contract as you breathe. While you sing you can build you self-confidence as you become more aware of your breathing and the tension of your muscles while you sing or speak.

If you want to keep your voice clear and steady, drink water before the performance and avoid dairy foods. Try to imagine your breath running through your lungs so that you can get more strength and projection in your voice. As you breathe, imagine the air going through your nose and then your body before you release it.

Make certain that your posture is good, with your shoulders held back, standing tall, so that your air passages are clear. If you don't stand tall with feet forward, the air going through your lungs will be occasionally blocked and not move through effectively.

Finally, when you are looking to improve your singing voice, remember that you should not strain. You might be singing something that is out of your range, you might find that you are not giving your voice enough support. In either case, it is time to halt and really think about what you are doing and how you can prevent further strain or injury!
