Unless you live in the very south-east corner of England, the summer weather never really got anywhere near the MET men's widely optimistic ‘barbeque summer' forecast. So, with autumn fast approaching, it's probably best to get ready to wrap up warmly, especially if the forecasters predict an Indian summer!

As has been common for the last few autumns and winters, there is a huge choice of women's coats and jackets available across the high street. From full-length to mini-short, varying cuts and styles and made from a multitude of materials, they are all out there, but the latest trend is definitely the big shoulders look.

July's runways were heavily influenced by the bold, brash look of the 80s including coats with big shoulders and they are bound to be heavily stocked in designer and high street stores this autumn. Such over-sized garments will certainly be on-trend and by way of contrast blouses and skirts will be tight-fitting. To complement the look thigh-high boots will add to the ‘power-dressing' ensemble. If you are uncomfortable with the overly big look, then boxed short jackets with smaller shoulder pads and short boots worn over metallic leggings are a stylish alternative.

However, still on-trend leather biker jackets will be widely worn this autumn, mostly black, in combination with a wide range of motorcycle inspired apparel and accessories. Short and tight-fitting, these can be worn with jeans or leggings and ankle boots. Alternatively skirts upwards from the knee in length, and accompanied by a pair of ankle boots complete the rock chick look.

In total contrast to the wild look, tweed is making a prolific comeback. No longer the preserve of middle-aged aunts or Miss Marple, not only is tweed featuring in the latest skirts and twin-sets but also in the latest styles of womens jackets, most commonly available in black and grey.

Whatever the material, bright summer colours will give way to more autumnal greys, charcoals and inky greens. Textured wool jackets are perfect for slightly chilly days and with the subtle addition of a big scarf and the necessary leather gloves can provide a great deal of protection against the elements, as well as looking gloriously stylish.

Also threatening to return from the 80s this autumn are over-the-knee boots, worn with leggings or jeans and short jackets. Alternatively, ankle boots and shoe boots are de rigueur, especially fitted with frills, zips or buttons, as are heeled brogues in black or purple.

Whatever you pull out of or add to your wardrobe this autumn, make sure you wrap up well; it could be a cold one.
