It's amazing to think that some of the very first and most primitive of satellites were launched in the late 1950's. Some 50 years later and we take it for granted that we receive television broadcasts transmitted via a range of satellites in orbit above the earth. Satellite TV is now available for almost everyone and is leading the way in High Definition broadcasts. High Definition or HD for short and the flat screen technology are two of the driving forces encouraging people to review and most likely change their TV and broadcast supplier.

In such a short time we have so many changes such that it is almost impossible to have the most up to date at all times. The first HD TVs were introduced in the late 90's but what we are now seeing the price of large screens dropping in price. If you wish to view a large screen in your home then you benefit substantially by being able to receive HD transmissions.

What is HDTV?

High-definition television is a digital television broadcasting system with higher resolution than traditional television systems known as standard-definition TV or SDTV. HDTV is digitally broadcast rather than analogue. To look in more depth gets very technical. The digital broadcast enables data to be transmitted much more efficiently because much less bandwidth is used. Sometime a TV set will be referred to as HD ready and this means that the television set itself is not capable of receiving an HD transmission. This isn't usually a problem because many [people will have a set top box which does receive the HD transmissions and then links to the television screen. Some HDTV's are a complete HD system and have an inbuilt receiver which maybe capable of receiving HD transmissions over the air, via satellite or cable but not all of these.

In addition to having HD programs on your HDTV (or HDTV ready) screen you will also be able to play some of your favourite games on the great new screen.
A satellite TV installation linked the HDTV system will be a great addition to any family's viewing. If you're looking at a new satellite TV installation then you may also wish to consider a DVR or Digital Video Recorder. This is an upgrade to the entry level service or product and is a more sophisticated set top box with a disk drive included so that you can record programs directly to disk. Some systems will then include two receivers in the set top box so that one receiver can record a program for you whilst the other receiver displays your chosen life viewing.

Even if you have your older TV set there are still good reasons to have a satellite TV installation. A satellite installation will give you a better picture than a cable or broadcast picture because satellite programs are transmitted digitally by satellite and the only cable required is the one that connects you TV to your set top box and receiver dish. You'll almost always get a larger selection of available channels. Finally if you wish to enjoy foreign language channels then yet again the satellite installation probably offers the widest choice.
