Retirement Communities: The First Thing to Do in Retirement

We bring a lot of baggage along with us when we go into retirement. And I am not talking about suitcases. I am talking about built-up stress, lack of physical conditioning, high blood pressure, poor nutrition, lack of sleep etc. Why do we have this baggage. Years of working in offices where we sit all day is one reason. A tightly packed schedule leaves little time for taking care of our health. These things don't suddenly go away when we retire. In fact, they can become worse.

They can become worse because, unfortunately, for too many people, they find a good easy chair and bed and that is where they spend their time--the TV, sleeping and eating. Can you relate to this. That is the wrong thing to do.

Instead, the first thing to do in retirement is to take care of your physical health. What is retirement really all about? This is what I think. I think it is about feeling good. And you can feel better by doing the things you have been neglecting for your health. Retirement is a time to take time to make nutritious meals. Time to take time to exercise. If you don't feel good in retirement, you can't enjoy it as you should.

The problem is that people can feel so lousy during working years that when they finally get to retirement they think it is a normal way to feel. They then do the opposite of what they should do by sitting around all day because they lack the energy to do little else and because they think they can't feel better.

The new active adult retirement communities are becoming very popular for retirees and they have fitness and nutritional programs available. When you choose a retirement community, make sure that the "fitness trail" will be adequate to give you a workout. See if it has a pool if you like to swim. Go and view the Fitness Center. See what amenities will help you improve your health. Take a look at your own unique needs and make sure they will be available to you at that community.

Keep up the exercise program. This is the hardest thing to do because we don't immediately feel better and we think it is a waste of time. A bonus could be a loss of the weight you thought you could not lose. Check with your doctor before beginning a fitness program.

So its important to take the time that you now have to improve your physical health first and then you will be able to enjoy the retirement you have worked so hard for.
