The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday lambasted the UPA government for being soft on terror and not daring to invoke Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) by fearing that it would be misused. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing an anti-terror rally organised by Delhi BJP, accused the government of dancing to the tune of terrorists and not doing anything substantial in countering the menace.

"We cannot fight hi-tech terrorism of 21st century with 19th century laws. The government is ready to face people being killed in terror attacks, but it is not willing to bring in POTA because of an unknown fear that it would be misused," Modi said. Criticising Railway Minister Lalu Yadav's recent remark that there had been terrorist attacks during NDA regime when POTA was in place, Modi said that the law is for fighting terrorism and not for preventing terrorist acts.

"Going by this argument, Section 302 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), which spells capital punishment for committing murder, should be scrapped because it has failed to prevent murders," Modi argued and said that Section 302 is not for preventing murders, but for dealing with murders and POTA has a similar role.

"They are opposing POTA, but they never uttered a word about the three letters released by Indian Mujahideen before the bomb blasts. They are doing this for mere vote bank politics," he charged. "I had informed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil, that terrorists can strike Delhi, but they failed to act on my tip-off," Modi said.

BJP president Rajnath Singh and PM in waiting L K Advani asked the government to immediately execute Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. Rajnath Singh said, "If Advani becomes prime minister, then we would eradicate terrorism from the country and invoke POTA."
