How to Create a Better Life - Part 4

In learning how to create a better life, it is important to know what to do, but it is equally important to learn what NOT to do.

One of the important things NOT do is compare yourself to others. There is a fine line between having mentors and aspiring to learn from someone than just outright being envious of someone.

It's impossible to have a better life when you are always trying to ‘keep up with the Jones'. There are a few reasons for this.

First of all, every time you're finally able to catch up, they have moved on to something else and you're behind again. Then your happiness is dependent upon what others around you are doing. You have no personal control over the direction of your life because you are too busy trying to follow someone else.

Second, in the beginning you may try to be like someone else because you admire them or want what they have. But over time, this person may change and become something that you never intended on being, but because you are so wrapped up in trying to keep up with them, you don't even realize that you have become someone you never wanted to be in the first place.

Instead, take control of your own future by being what you want to be, not in being what someone else is. It's okay to learn from people, get advice, and sometimes even duplicate what they have done. BUT, you should do this because you are secure in where you want to go in life and in whom you want to be.

When you compare yourself to others, you will soon learn that you can never keep up. So, be yourself!

If you are not happy with whom you are, then begin to develop, learn, and grow into the person you want to become. Ask yourself this question, who do you have to become to get what you want in life.

For instance, if you want to be the number one sales person for your company, who do you have to become to reach that goal? It may be that you have to be someone who starts working earlier and ends working later than everyone else in the company, someone who attends sales conferences as often as possible, someone who is a master net worker, etc. These are things that you can do to reach your goal.

If you just are trying to be like the number one sales person in your company, then you will try to drive the same car, live in the same neighbourhood, and eat at the same restaurants as this person. The problem is that you probably can't afford the same life style because you don't earn the same amount of income. So you end up in massive amounts of debt and live a miserable life because you are comparing yourself to someone else.

Start creating a better life by becoming a better you, not by becoming a clone of someone else.
