Family & Parenting, A Perfect Evening

Picture this if you will.

Sunset, the witching hour. A back yard somewhere in Quebec, not far from Montreal. A mass of greenery, could be deepest Vermont. Fresh, not a hint of muggy. Cool, clean, vibrant. The light is magic, Tuscan almost.

A simple meal. Mediterranean, almost. Demi salade niçoise. Lettuce, cucumber, white tuna, olive oil. No black olives, no anchovies, no tomatoes. Didn't fancy hitting the market today. Croutons, because yesterday's baguette was going stale. A drop of Portuguese rosé, a gulp of Canadian beer. Eat your heart out, Paul Bocuse.

No backdrop of pastel colored houses, wooden shutters, window boxes overflowing with geranium and mimosa. No garçon hovering, no stroll along la Promenade des Anglais, and no horrific addition, either.

Just. The old garden table, worn gray by countless Quebec winters. The only lettuce in the icebox. An ersatz Provençale table cloth made in China. Fragrant wafts from the neighbor's perfumed trees.

And, front of me, the lady I met and fell in love with twenty-odd years ago, when I'd thought it was far too late for all that nonsense of falling in love again.

There we are, in the sunset. The gloaming. Le couché du soleil.

The cherished, ongoing drama, late-arrival adolescents have shot off to the city of Quebec, to celebrate, with their Afghan/Haitian/ Moroccan/Iranian friends, the foundation of their adopted country, leaving us old lovers, alone in the cool, cool, cool of the damned romantic evening.

It grows darker. The salad bowl is empty. The mosquitoes start to bite.

We go inside, the whole evening spread out in front of us.

It doesn't get much better that that.

David Lovattsmith is a grumpy old romantic, living in Montreal, one perfect moment at a time.
